“I brought take-out,” Quinn says brightly with a grin when I open my door. She’s wearing a black T-shirt with white cut-off jean shorts and huge, tortoise-shaped sunglasses that overpower the frame of her face. A ray of bright sunshine gleams behind her, framing her in a golden light. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sight more beautiful.

“Hi,” I respond with a smile of my own, taking the food from her and kissing her on the forehead. She wraps her arms around my middle, fisting my gray sweatshirt at my lower back, hanging on like maybe she just needs something to cling to for a minute. I wrap my free hand around her, under the back of her head, giving her the best one-handed hug I can manage.

“I will say, the free food is one definite perk of working at Matt’s.” She releases me and makes her way inside, setting her bags on the kitchen table that never gets used. “I even swiped an extra salsa container for later.” The look of pride on her face makes me chuckle.

I slide my loose pile of budget spreadsheets and expense reports that I was initially planning to go through tonight to the side and grab two plates from the cabinet before opening the bag. The Very Best of The Rolling Stones is softly playing from the vinyl player in the corner of the living room next to the TV, creating a soft, comfortable ambiance for us.

I place two heaping shrimp tacos on a plate, spread out some chips, and add a container of salsa next to them before sliding it to where she’s sitting on a barstool.

“Something to drink? I can’t whip up a pineapple colada—I’m not that fancy—but I have beer.”

She laughs, popping a chip in her mouth. “Beer’s great, thanks.”

I grab two beers from the fridge and place one in front of her, then make a plate of my own.

“I’m out of paper towels. I’m gonna grab some from the closet. Be right back,” I say, making my way down the hall to the little supply closet on the left.

“Okay,” she says cheerfully, taking a bite of the taco. By the time I make it back, she’s already finished one whole taco and is starting in on the second.

“These look delicious,” I say, sliding onto the barstool next to her.

“They are.” She nods. “So, how was your day?”

“Pretty good. Worked this morning and then stopped by my mom’s house.”

“Were you able to fix her washing machine?”

“Actually, Ethan fixed it. He was already working on it by the time I got there, which is actually a big deal. He doesn’t voluntarily offer to help with anything, especially when he knows I’m on the way.”

Her eyebrows lift as she takes a sip of her beer. “That’s a good thing, right?”

“It’s a step in the right direction, that’s for sure.”

With a nod, she resumes eating. When we’re both finished, I grab both of our plates to bring to the sink.

“Oh! I want
